The King of Thailand, Bhumibol Adulyadej, the world’s longest-reigning monarch, has died after a 70 year reign on the throne, the palace disclosed.

The monarch who passed on at the age of 88, was widely respected in Thailand. He was central to the stability of Thailand, following a series of political turbulence and multiple coups.

He had been in poor health in recent years, making very few public appearances in the last couple of years.

Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn will be the new monarch, the prime minister has announced.

In a televised address to the nation, Prayut Chan-ocha said Thailand would hold a one-year mourning period and that all entertainment functions must be “toned down” for a month.

“He is now in heaven and may be looking over Thai citizens from there,” he said of King Bhumibol.

The king’s death comes as Thailand remains under military rule following a coup in 2014.

The palace last weekend made it known that the king’s health was not stable and that it was a source of concern for the chiefs.

Many Thais took to wearing pink in a bid to bring good luck to the ailing monarch. Hundreds of people had gathered outside the hospital where he was being treated.

The palace had warned on Sunday that the king’s health was “not stable”.

Most Thais have only known King Bhumibol on the throne and his influence has superseded that of bickering politicians since the closing days of the second world war.

However, his critics are of the opinion that he endorsed coups and at times failed to speak out against human rights abuses.

Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn, who is 63 years of age, is not as popular as his deceased father in Thailand and has yet to command thesame level of respect as his father. He spends much of his time abroad, especially in Germany.
